Athens

The last stop of my Greek vacation took me, after the idyllic island of Ikaria, to the capital city of Greece. Athens is a city that at first glance is characterized by its concrete landscape, but at the same time surprises with beautiful little cafés and bars scattered throughout the city. Athens undoubtedly has its own charm - the architecture is a fascinating mixture of different styles, and buildings are crowded together.

Acropolis Museum

One of the highlights of my stay was visiting the Acropolis Museum. From the moment I stepped inside, I was impressed by the modern architecture and the thoughtfully designed interior. The curated presentation of the exhibits captivated me, offering a fresh and immersive way to experience the history of the ancient world.

The interior design is deliberately restrained, allowing the exhibits to take center stage. The architect, Bernard Tschumi, opted for a choice of materials that is reduced to the essentials: metal, marble and glass. This clear and minimalist aesthetic creates an elegant stage on which the antique works of art are shown to their best advantage. “The competition jury chose this design because it is such a simple, clean and beautiful solution that matches the classical beauty and clarity of the special exhibits,” explains Prof. Dimitrios Pandermalis, President of the Organization for the Construction of the New Acropolis Museum. A visit to the Acropolis Museum is not only worthwhile for lovers of ancient art, but also for anyone who appreciates the beauty of architecture and interior design.

Food & Café

In the heart of Exarchia, a neighborhood often celebrated as a hub of activism and alternative culture—sometimes referred to as Athens' “anarchist” quarter—you’ll find Cookoomela Grill. This unique eatery offers a delightful twist on a Greek classic: vegan souvlaki. A must-visit spot for those seeking plant-based options without compromising on flavor!

Athens is brimming with charming spots and specialty cafés that serve excellent coffee and delightful breakfasts. One gem we absolutely loved is behold_theman café. This cozy establishment offers a variety of delicious breakfast options and sandwiches. What makes it even more special is the inviting outdoor seating, where you can relax and enjoy your meal while taking in the vibrant street ambiance.

For an insider tip, don’t miss Titanas, a charming little bar in the heart of Athens in the Koukaki area near the syggrou-fix metro station. Known for its cozy atmosphere, this spot serves delicious tapas, including classics like stuffed vine leaves, perfectly paired with a selection of wine and other drinks. It’s the ideal place to unwind and soak up the city’s vibrant energy.

On our last day in Athens, just before heading home, we discovered Holy Llama. This delightful spot charmed us with its beautiful and delicious pastries, as well as its flavorful vegan-friendly lunch options. A perfect place to end our trip on a high note!
